On June 25, 2016 WHSV's Morgan Donnelly won a regional Emmy at the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter award ceremony for Outstanding News Series. The 30-minute documentary "Change After Tragedy" explored the debates happening after the mass shooting at Virginia Tech in 2007, and the 2015 shooting of WDBJ's Alison Parker and Adam Ward. The news series covered topics ranging from gun control, mental health, and workplace human resource challenges as a way to look at possible solutions to curb gun violence.

This year there were 937 submission in 105 separate categories, with 317 nominations announced back in May. The Chesapeake chapter consists of more than 900 television broadcast professionals, and awards are given once a year to recognize outstanding achievements in television.

"Change After Tragedy" also won an award from the Virginia's Associated Press Broadcasters for Best In-Depth Reporting, and a meritorious award for Best In-Depth Report from the Virginia Association of Broadcasters.

This is WHSV's first regional Emmy award.
