Category: Station News

WIBW TV has won a Heartland Regional Emmy for its April 24, 2016 Sunday, 5:30 p.m. Newscast covering the Topeka County Club Motel shootout and fatal fire.

The announcement of the award was made at the 2017 Heartland Emmy Awards, with ceremonies held in Denver and Oklahoma City.

The 13 News Team was heavily involved with live social media and broadcast coverage during the event, in which a suspect was firing from a hotel room and wounded two law enforcement officers before setting a fire and burning a hotel wing to the ground.

The next day wrap up team coverage earned the Regional Emmy for Weekend Newscast.

The team coverage earlier won a Kansas Press Club Gold Award for breaking news coverage.
